Review: Undercover

Cost: AU$5.99
Developer: Orbicule BVBA

This utility is aimed at helping iPhone owners track down lost or stolen iPhones by means of mobile phone tower triangulation or GPS. It works by having you register your device with the Orbicule BVBA site where you enter the essential information about your phone such as its serial number and other unique identifiers. When you report the iPhone as lost or stolen, its location will appear on a Google Map. Mobile phone tower triangulation helps narrow the iPhone’s location to within hundreds of yards and GPS helps you pinpoint your iPhone’s location to within a few feet. Those with an iPhone 3G will benefit from Undercover the most.

When trying to track down your iPhone via the Orbicule BVBA site, you have only two options: to report your iPhone as lost or stolen.

In the “stolen” scenario, the app will appear to be a game when the thief launches it (assuming he/she does). It will have a splash screen and a “Loading Game…” timer that takes several seconds to finish – enough time for the iPhone to transmit its location to your online Undercover account.

After that, you can use the information however you wish: set the bloodhounds onto the thief, or pass it on to the police. You will be required to provide local police department contact info in the Undercover set up process and when the “stolen” option is activated, the local cops will get an email indicating the location and that a thief has taken some liberties with your property.

In the “I Lost it” scenario, when Undercover is launched (again, this assumes the application is opened), it will display a message you can specify on the Undercover Web Site and a button to dial a designated phone number. You may tempt the find with “Reward offered for returning this lost phone”.

While the program isn’t foolproof, it’s probably one of the best options you have for recovering your missing phone for a few dollars.
