Tethering allows iPhone 3G S users to use the 3G connection on their iPhone to connect their notebook computer to the internet over USB or Bluetooth.

Customers need to pay the $9.95 month fee to allow tethering and consume data on their existing iPhone plan.

Optus has already begun changing its pricing structures by adding data packs that are an added cost over subscription plans and the tethering fee.

An Optus 2GB “Mobile as Modem” pack is AU $24.99 a month while a similar 6GB plan costs $44.99.

Mobile Internet/3G access:
If you exceed the ‘included value’ of your plan in any one billing period, standard rates of your plan will apply. Excess usage rates for this plan are 35c per MB.

Network Coverage on your iPhone:
Optus customers can only access HSDPA and 3G speeds within covered areas. Outside these areas, users will be connected to GPRS which is far slower than 3G.

Special Features: Optus ‘Bonus Time’
The Optus iPhone $49 Cap offers Optus ‘yes’ time every night meaning Optus customers can make free 20 minute voice calls, 8pm – midnight, 7 days a week, from on Optus Mobile to another within Australia and no flagfall applies.

Optus customers can also get free 5 minute voice calls at any time of day to family members on the same Optus account.

Voicemail: Optus charges 30c pre 30 seconds for voicemail retrievals (included in the cap).

The Optus Zoo: Browsing the Optus Zoo is free until you purchase a particular product. It does not use the included data in the cap.

Invoices and Direct Debit: A $2.20 fee will apply every month you wish to receive a paper bill. If you chose a credit, charge or direct debit card to pay your bill, a 1% fee (including GST) will be charged.

About the ‘yes’ iPhone Cap Plan: This plan is only available if the iPhone handset remains connected on this plan. If your iPhone handset is no longer used and connected on the ‘yes’ iPhone Cap Plan then Optus will transfer your service to an equivalent non-iPhone Cap rate plan.
