Finding a mobile phone without a camera is a difficult task these days, with almost all handsets offering some kind of built-in camera of varying resolutions. On the back of the iPhone, discretely packed away towards the top is a two-megapixel snapper.
Although 2 mega pixels isn’t much of a feat for a mobile phone camera, it is fairly standard and proves that there is plenty of room for improvement on the iPhone. In fact, many iPhone users have lamented the decision by Apple to stick such a behind-the-times camera in to such a savvy-specced device.
While a 2 mega pixel camera isn’t a high enough resolution to print out your photos, the truth is that no mobile phone has enough image quality to take on the role of a compact camera, and so the feature isn’t so much for photographers but rather, casual, point and click moments.
The iPhone 3G was expected to get a camera upgrade when it was announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2008 but Apple decided against the resolution boost. This was said to be in part due to keeping the cost down but also for leaving room for future generations to improve. In future models, the iPhone’s camera is almost definitely going to be revamped, but until then users will have to make do with mediocre quality photographs.
